Sabri.MNaser@najah.edu

Vision

To maintain an efficient academic department with high quality research and teaching, resulting in national and international contribution to the welfare of society.

Mission

The Department of Biology offers a modern and multi-disciplinary course that comprehensively covers the vast area of Biology.  Our mission is to provide an outstanding learning environment that integrates education, scholarship, and service to actively engage students in the biological sciences and to foster their development as lifelong learners

Aims

The aim of the Department is to provide the essential requirements for a comprehensive undergraduate education in various biological disciplines to produce knowledgeable and competitive graduates to advance to professional or graduate programmes, or enter employment in the public and private sectors.

Introduction

The Department of Biological Sciences was established in 1977. It offers undergraduates a practical knowledge of living matter at the cellular organism and population levels.  Fundamental subjects such as cell biology, genetics, physiology, microbiology, biochemistry, and ecology are supplemented by a wide variety of elective topics, which will prepare students for future careers in teaching, research, and for applied work in industry, agriculture and public health.

In addition, the Biology Department offers a B.Sc. biotechnology program as a minor specialty. In this program, students learn basic and applied biotechnology techniques including recombinant DNA technology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetic engineering, enzyme and protein production, and industrial production of pharmaceutical products. This program is very beneficial as it prepares students to apply different biotechnology techniques in medicine, agriculture, immunology, pharmacy and elsewhere.

Besides offering B.Sc. degrees in biology and biotechnology, the Biology Department offers a M.Sc. degree with the instruction and guidance of highly qualified faculty and staff.

 (1) B.Sc. Specialisation Requirements

To be admitted to the program, the student must fulfill the following requirements:

1) Successful completion of all general biology courses 24101, 24107,24102, and 24108 with a cumulative grade average of no less than 70%.

2) Successful completion of general chemistry courses 23101, 23107,23102, 23108.

In case of competition among applicants, priority of admittance will be selected according to their academic standings.

(2) Graduation Requirements

To earn a B.Sc. degree in Biological Sciences, the student must successfully complete 137 credit hours. These include university requirement compulsory and elective courses, college requirement courses, and department requirement courses.
