In a remarkable national achievement, two teams from An-Najah National University have secured the first and third places in the NASA Space Apps Challenge 2025 at the national level, earning the honor of representing Palestine in the global finals of the world’s largest innovation competition organized by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
The winning team, THE SHADOW BROKERS, claimed first place in Palestine, while the creative team ASTRO_CRASH.EXE earned third place in the national finals. The event, hosted by the A. M. Qattan Foundation in Ramallah on October 3–4, 2025, brought together more than 30 teams from Palestinian universities to develop innovative solutions to real-world challenges facing Earth and space.
The university’s participation was coordinated by the Student Association for Physics and Astronomy (SAPA) under the supervision of the Deanship of Student Affairs, which oversaw the formation and preparation of the teams through a multi-stage process involving scientific training, problem-solving sessions, and internal competitions.
Following intense rounds of evaluation, three out of the six finalist teams selected nationwide were from An-Najah, reflecting the university’s leadership in scientific innovation. Ultimately, THE SHADOW BROKERS took the top national prize, while ASTRO_CRASH.EXE achieved third place. Their projects will now compete globally under NASA’s international evaluation framework.
Dr. Ahmed Bassalat, lecturer in the Department of Physics, SAPA supervisor, and a member of the judging panel, praised the students’ performance, stating: “This success is a testament to the talent and determination of An-Najah students. They have once again proven their ability to compete and represent Palestine on the world stage.”
Mr. Mohammad Daqqa, Dean of Student Affairs, commended SAPA and its supervising faculty for their dedication and innovation, noting that the achievement aligns with the university’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — particularly in promoting quality education, partnerships for innovation, and sustainable communities.
The winning teams included THE SHADOW BROKERS, composed of Abdulqader Muayyad, Hadi Mousa, Ali Abu Hajleh, Ali Zaid, Adnan Odeh, and Adel Ibdah, who secured first place at the national level, and ASTRO_CRASH.EXE, consisting of Fathi Helou, Tuqa Ghanem, Razan Abu Diya, Mo’men Hijazi, Mo’men Awwad, and Kareem Saleha, who achieved third place with their innovative project and creative problem-solving approach.
This milestone reinforces An-Najah National University’s growing reputation as a hub for scientific excellence, innovation, and youth empowerment — both locally and internationally.
